No income tax and no state sales tax

Alaska repealed its individual income tax in 1980 following the oil revenue boom, and has not reinstated it. There is also no statewide sales tax, though individual boroughs and municipalities may levy their own local sales tax — Juneau and Ketchikan do, Anchorage does not.

Your pay stub carries federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare only.

The Permanent Fund Dividend is federally taxable

Alaska distributes an annual dividend to eligible residents from the earnings of the Alaska Permanent Fund. The amount varies year to year with fund performance and legislative appropriation.

The point most residents miss: the dividend is not taxed by Alaska, but it is taxable income federally. It must be reported on your federal return, and because it arrives without withholding it can create a surprise federal balance due for a household receiving several dividends. If you have a family of four, the combined amount is large enough to be worth planning for rather than absorbing at filing time.

This calculator models wage income only. Add your expected dividend to your federal taxable income separately.

Cost of living is the real offset

The tax picture is genuinely favourable, but Alaska's cost of goods, energy and transport runs well above the national average, particularly outside Anchorage and Fairbanks. A salary comparison against a Lower 48 offer should be run on purchasing power, not take-home pay alone.

Common questions

Is the Permanent Fund Dividend taxed?

Not by Alaska, but yes federally. It is reportable income on your federal return and arrives without withholding, so set aside a portion for the federal liability.

Does Alaska have local sales taxes?

Some boroughs and municipalities do, though there is no statewide rate. Anchorage has none; Juneau and several others do.

Do I need to file an Alaska state tax return?

No individual income tax return exists. You may need to file a separate application for the Permanent Fund Dividend.
